Something New – Team ‘Standards’

For the first time ever, FIRST Robotics Competition teams will be allowed to create a Team ‘Standard’, or flag, that will be flown over their player stations on the field during matches. For centuries, standards have been used to rally troops or to show the presence of important leaders. They have been a source of pride and inspiration. FIRST STRONGHOLD is all in good fun, but this is a great chance to show your colors and your team pride on the playing field itself!  We’re releasing this information now so you can get started on this activity if you wish, no need to wait until Kickoff.

Standard over Player Station

(please note, image is purely illustrative and any other game specific field elements are hidden for the purposes of this pre-Kickoff image)

The Team Standard is completely optional. There is no element of FIRST STRONGHOLD you won’t be able to play if you don’t create a standard. There will simply be an empty spot over your player station during your matches where your standard would have been displayed.

Teams are encouraged, but not required, to make their Standards two‐sided, so any spectators behind player stations are not left out.

Also, Team Standards do not replace the flags or other team pride items many teams give to the event MCs to flourish when introducing them before matches. MCs will still be using these items to introduce teams, so bring them on!

Further, the Team Standard is not an inspection item. Inspectors will not be measuring your Team Standard to make sure it meets requirements before you will be allowed to bring it to the field. However, you should be aware that as Team Standards will be hung over player stations, oversized or otherwise improperly constructed Standards do have the potential to interfere either with game play or with the ability of spectators to see the match. If a referee or other official believes a Team Standard does not meet requirements, it may be checked. If found to not meet requirements, it will be removed from the field.

We also have some interesting items we’ll be providing teams to add to their standards. At the start of every event, each team will be given a ‘history patch’, that will indicate the week in which the event occurred. These patches are designed to be placed on your Team Standard, so be sure to leave room! The history patch for every competition week is different. As most FRC teams now participate in more than one event, teams will be able to show the history of their competition season right on their Team Standards. History Patches will be provided right through the FIRST Championship.

In addition, teams earning the Chairman’s Award, the Engineering Inspiration Award, the Rookie All Star award, or being a member of the Winning Alliance at any events will be presented with Achievement Streamers during the awards ceremony. These Achievement Streamers are designed to be hung on your Team Standards. This is another opportunity for teams to show their pride. Hall of Fame teams and Original/Sustaining Teams will also receive unique streamers so they may display these accomplishments. The streamers for each achievement are different so spectators and other teams will be able to tell at a glance what teams have accomplished in these areas.

By the time we get to FIRST Championship, we’re looking forward to seeing lots of colorful Team Standards showing a history of the weeks in which teams competed and their major achievements.

Full Team Standards specs are shown here.

Please join us in making the 2016 FRC season the most exciting and colorful ever!

I noticed that teams are encouraged to make two-sided standards, but only one standard patch will be provided to each team per event; seems a bit of a mismatch.

Hi Gus, you're right, that is a mismatch. Our thinking was that something less than 100% of teams will be making Standards, and of those, something less than 100% will be making two-sided standards. Also, we expect most actual viewing of the Standard to take place from the front. It essentially came down to a cost/benefit analysis, and we decided not to make the investment in a second set. Spectators in the rear will still be able to see the Standard itself and streamers, but not patches. However, you may be able to find a team at your event not creating a Standard, and ask for their patch.

Can you give us a suggested size guide. A standard flag size or a small welcome one?

Hi Sandy, please take a look a the specification document linked in the post, you'll find the size and other requirements.

I love lights, especially bright, flashy, color changing, patterned, almost moving lights like cheaply made rgb led strips. May we use those to create our standard?

You may use LEDs, but please look at the specification document under 'Content'. During matches, Standards must be 'fixed' - no strobing, flashing, changing color, etc, as that may be distracting to players and spectators.

This is such a great way to embody spirit a long with incorporating the competition. It gives the students something to design in the off season. Thank you for the idea!

Looking at the specifications, it appears that a two sided standard would entail making two flags, and not just a double sided one. Can we get some confirmation on this?

You could make a double-sided single flag if you wanted to, and just work around the vertical support pole (or not worry about it). The two-sided Standard with two separate flags shown is just one suggestion.

I notice in the example there is a brace for the standard. Will that be installed above our players so we just need to insert the pole into it?

Yes, players will just need to put the vertical pole in place in the holder.

Will any event volunteers be responsible for any part of the mounting/dismounting of the standards?
Will step stools be needed/provided to the teams to mount these standards?

Teams will be mounting Standards themselves, but if assistance is needed because of the height, volunteers or others present may be asked to lend a hand. We'll make sure equipment is available as necessary to help.

Is the standard only for this year's game or will it be used for future games? If it is only for this year, can it have the name "Stronghold" on it? If so, does "Stronghold" need to appear in the FIRST logo format for the game, or can it be in other fonts?

Diane, these are two surprisingly difficult questions. We conceived of the Standards for use in the 2016 Season only, however, we can't say for sure some form of Standard won't play a part in future seasons. For now, though, assume it will just be used for 2016. Also, the formal name of the game is 'FIRST STRONGHOLD' all caps, italicized, in a standard font (like Arial) and with the 'sm' in superscript after it. If you want to formally refer to the game on your standard, this is the way to do it. If this seems too restrictive (and I can understand if it does) you may just want to not use it.

Can you make a four sided standard if it does not hang over the front of the playing field. This might look like a square so every one can see your images.

Standards need to conform to the published specifications, not exceeding a volume that’s 12” wide x 24” tall x 3” deep as indicated, so a standard that looked like a 'square' from the top, as I think you are describing, would not be allowed, unless the sides were 3" or less wide.

In the diagram, the pole is shown to insert into the base; I'm wondering, how big can the diameter of the pole can be?

Thanks for asking, Robbie! Please take a look a the specification document linked in the post, you'll find the Outer Diameter requirements in the Size section.

What are the creative limitations on what can or cannot be on the flag? Are there certain rule regarding profanity or vulgar depictions? Thanks!

If you look at the specifications document linked in the blog, you'll see that we ask teams to decorate their Standard 'in the spirit of FIRST and Gracious Professionalism'. Profane or vulgar depictions would not meet this expectation.

Can we make two different flag designs, one on one side and the other on the other side? Do we have to include team sponsors?

Great question, Odessa! There are no restrictions about what to include for content on each side, as long as the Standards reflect your team’s identity and be decorated in the spirit of FIRST and Gracious Professionalism. Please see the Specifications in the link above under the Content section.

Will there be a guide/diagram/cheat sheet released so teams know what each streamer/patches mean? or do we have to figure them out during competition?

Great question, Russell! Details about Achievement Streamers and History Patches will be available after Kickoff.

Sorry I hate to ask a second question, but How will the patches self adhere? is it velcro? and if so, which side is attached to the patches the soft or rough side? My team would like to prepare the standards early.

Thank you

Great question! The patches will not use hook and loop to adhere to the Standard. Rather they will have a sticky backing that will adhere directly to the material.

Yesterday a few of us on my team were discussing ideas for the standards and we were wondering, based off the fact our main color is blue, if the standards would have to show colors based on the red and blue alliances? Or will that not be an issue with the fact gameplay is not based on them/could we do reversible color based designs?

Great question! There are no requirements about colors for the Standards. They just need to reflect your team and they must be in the spirit of FIRST and Gracious Professionalism. Teams are welcome to make more than one Standard. For example, one could made and displayed when the Team is on the Red Alliance, and one for when the Team is on the Blue Alliance.

Hello
Since we'll be earning patches for out achievements, does this mean that we won't earn blue banners anymore? Or will there be blue banners and patches?
