2016 Safety Animation Award Competition Details

Hello teams!

It’s finally here: the Safety Animation Award Announcement! The topic for this year’s Safety Animation Award competition is ‘Working Safely with your Robot’. Every FIRST Robotics Competition team designs, builds, and competes with a robot. Every team also needs to work safely with their robot when it’s being built and tested, when it’s being moved to and from various locations at events, and when it’s being moved to and from the events themselves. Create an animation showing our community the best practices for handling the robot during these times! Your animation doesn’t necessarily need to show all three of these contexts, but if you can do so in a fun and engaging way – and in the time limit for the animation - please do. Also, please create videos in keeping with the medieval theme of the 2016 FRC season. This is not a requirement, but we would love to select, as our winner, an animation that highlights best safety practices while keeping within our theme. Get creative, and help keep your fellow teams safe!

The team with the winning animation will receive a trophy, be highlighted in an FRC Blog and in FIRST Social Media, and have their animation played at every official FRC event of the season.

Official information about the animation can be found on the FRC Safety Page.

Let’s see those great animations!

According to one of our lead mentors, the submission deadline for the Safety Animation Award Competition is listed as Dec 11 in TIMS, but Jan 21 on the FIST Safety web page. Which is correct? Thanks!

Thanks for pointing this out to us, Kevin! The Safety Animation Video is due on January 21, 2016 at 3pm (ET) as outlined on the FRC Safety Page. We are working to correct the date in TIMS now!

Hello,

I have not been able to confirm from the FRC Safety Page whether or not there is a requirement on what animation software teams are required to use for their video's. Could you let me know as I am working with our team on developing a safety video.

Thank you.

Hi Patti, no particular animation software is required to be used. And as noted on the FRC Safety Page, any type of animation is allowed, even stop-motion animation. If a reasonable person were to look at your video and think 'that's animation', no matter what style or software used, it would meet this requirement.

Hello
Is it possible to use any videogame like Garry's mod with a mod made by the team to make the animation in a style like Red VS Blue?

Great question! No particular animation software is required to be used.  And as noted on the FRC Safety Page, any type of animation is allowed, even stop-motion animation. If a reasonable person were to look at your video and think 'that's animation', no matter what style or software used, it would meet this requirement. Please remember not to use any copyrighted images, characters, or any other material.

Hi,
I wanted to check to see if the FRC Safety Manual will be updated from what is linked on the FRC Safety page. Currently it indicates it is 2015, are we utilizing the same one as last season or will it be updated to 2016?

Thank you

Great question! We will be updating the Safety Manual for the 2016 season, however, we don't anticipate any significant changes. Teams are encouraged to use the 2015 Safety Manual as a guide until the 2016 Safety Manual is published.
